If you haven't been before you might like to know that The Creative Cutting Company is a salon with an interesting past and an exciting future. It was founded by Lisa Rutter nearly 30 years ago and as less than 10% of the hairdressing salons that open with a fanfare and high hopes ever get to the ripe old age of 20, let alone 25 it’s already proved itself to be a special kind of salon!

We asked Lisa what inspired her to open ‘Creative Cutting’ and she said …

“As a girl I grew up in Walmley and went to Walmley Schools. Every Saturday morning I would love going to with my Nan to a salon called Marion Paul. It was a very popular place. How did I know?  Because stretching out of the door there was always a long queue of ladies waiting to get their hair done! Once we got inside I would sit and watch the stylists setting and putting hair-up and I remember deciding this is what I would do when I left school.”

“I began my Hairdressing career with an apprenticeship at Steiners in Sutton Coldfield which gave me a great education but I always knew I wanted my own hair salon just like the one Nan went to.”

“With my dad’s help, at the age of 23 I started to look for suitable premises but we couldn’t find anything that seemed right … until one day we spotted an advert for a salon that was for sale in Walmley. When I went to view it I got a shock because I discovered it was the Marion Paul salon and nothing had changed from all those years ago when I sat waiting for nan on a Saturday morning!”

“I WAS IN LOVE.”

“In the late 1980s raising the finance to start your own business when you’re only 23 wasn’t easy but I managed to do it and I then began to organise the first refit on my very own salon … it was an exciting time and as you can imagine, full of ideas I set to work.”

“I chose my Backwashes, Mirrors, Sections, Reception, and it was great fun, but then came the difficult bit … dealing with Electricians, Plasterers, Plumbers and so on, what a headache! The good news is it eventually all came together and I was really proud of the end result.”

“Next I decided I wanted to use L’Oreal Products, which are expensive, but good, and as the saying goes … ‘You’re Worth It!’.”

“Then before I could open I suddenly realised … Marion Paul needed a new name! But what should it be? I went to the local library and mulled over all the ‘Yellow Pages’ looking for inspiration, but that didn’t help. Then a friend suggested ‘Creative Cutting’ and the rest is history.”

“That history consists of nearly 25 years of amazing hairdressing with 5 refits, 4 new salon floors, 4 different ‘Creative Cutting’ signs plus a new shop front and a large new extension at the back of the building. Why all the changes? Because I was determined not to make the same mistakes as the Marion Paul salon which got taken for granted and not cared for over the years.”

“Creative Cutting has always moved with the times and while I have a breath in my body it always will, which means I’m just getting my second wind and the future for the salon is bright!”
Here’s to the next 30 Years.
